Joy Rios joins me on Leading with Health to talk about the value of healthcare technology – and why it’s all about creating a better world.
Joy is Co-Founder of Chirpy Bird Health IT Consulting. She is a fierce believer that it’s possible to do well by doing good. This has shown up in her professional journey as trying to accelerate the transition to value-based care. She’s a four-time author on government initiatives, she’s traveled the country helping clinicians navigate these programs elbow-to-elbow, and has trained thousands of practices remotely. Joy is also Co-Host of HIT Like a Girl podcast. Connect with her on Twitter and LinkedIn.
8:12 – JR: “After reading all of the details from the government, I was like, ‘Oh this is going to be important one day and I don’t think people are paying attention.’ I took all my notes and turned it into a book.”
10:50 – JR: “My approach has been just to try to speak in plain English, in a way that people understand.”
13:00 – JR: “It eventually became very clear to me that healthcare, access to healthcare, everything – even prevention – is something that affects every single one of us and none of us is immune.”
14:00 – JR: “The vision for value based care was something that I could really subscribe to. I really liked the idea. Whether or not it’s done perfectly, it’s certainly not the kind of shift that can happen overnight … it was something that would need to be incremental and iterative. It felt like the type of career that I could sign up for.”
17:40 – JR: “I am also a big believer in campground rules. It’s the idea of you leave a place, a system, a person, whatever, better off than how you found it.”
28:13 – JR: “When you go to these conferences, oftentimes the voices are coming from men. even if they have to do with women’s issues. And I just felt a little bit disheartened and I guess, coming from the same approach, was like, what can I do? And so we incorporated (HIT Like a Girl podcast) as part of our marketing strategy for our consulting, to amplify the voices and achievements specifically of women working in health IT.”
